ICE Fishing - Feb 17th, 2011
A no cost opportunity of ice fishing was offered to 25 OIF/OEF/OND Veterans. The day included a noon meal, refreshments, bait, fishing equipment, guides and volunteers! The goal was to honor service and sacrifice by offering recently returning Veterans a memorable day “afield”. Although the event wasn’t full to capacity, everyone who came had an enjoyable day, and we expect to be full next year! Thanks to all who attended.

Andrea Howe and Kelly sold popcorn, cotton candy, and princess headbands to raise money and awareness about the Pine Grove Program. It was very rainy that day and there weren’t a lot of people about, but it was fun anyway. The Bingham Fire Department had some great competitions after a parade of their fire trucks as well as other town’s trucks. We appreciate their invitation to be a vendor at the event.

Bob Howe went on location to NYC to instruct some members of the NYFD on the art of fly fishing. After a powerpoint presentation of the basic info, they had a delicious meal the house had prepared for Bob, Andrea, and David Giampetruzzi. Then, they all drove to a pond where they could put their skills to work and practice casting
The firemen who were instructed in NYC came to the lodge for a free fishing trip of 2 days and 3 nights. Their trip included a whitewater rafting trip with Moxie Rafting, dinner at a classic Maine fishing camp, Harrison’s Pierce Pond Camps, practice fishing on the pond at Pine Grove Lodge, fishing for the native trout in the local Kennebec River, and relaxing times by the campfire! It was our pleasure to provide this experience to the heroes of New York City, they have survived the tragedy of 9/11, and we have not forgotten. It has affected the men who responded, and even the men who weren’t there that day, in ways we can’t understand.
Thank you for your sacrifice and your bravery.
